Eastern Bristlebird Translocation
Documenting a landmark conservation effort
Monitoring and Preparing Birds for Translocation
Before the birds could be moved, trained field teams carefully captured and assessed individuals to ensure they were healthy enough for relocation. Each bird was handled with extreme care while specialists collected measurements and fitted lightweight tracking transmitters. These devices allow researchers to monitor the birds after release and better understand how they adapt to their new environment.
A Collaborative Effort in the Field
During a particularly wet week in April 2022, a task force of 40 people from across three Australian states—including Federal, Victorian and New South Wales government agencies—joined forces with ten partner organisations to undertake the first wild-to-wild interstate translocation of the Eastern Bristlebird.

Working in difficult weather conditions, scientists, rangers and conservation staff coordinated the careful transport and release of the birds into suitable habitat, marking a major milestone in efforts to secure the future of this threatened species.

This project represents an important step in protecting one of Australia’s most vulnerable birds. By establishing an insurance population, we are helping ensure the eastern bristlebird has a stronger chance of surviving future environmental challenges.
Documenting these moments helps tell the story of the dedicated people working behind the scenes to protect Australia’s biodiversity.
